What is the Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Program?

It is a 4-year systematic program of learning. Apprentices can obtain all the necessary knowledge and skills to become a Journeyman Inside Wireman.

8000 Hours of On-The-Job Training. Apprentices train to proficiency in all skills required to install, maintain, and troubleshoot various electrical systems on commercial and industrial job sites.

720 Hours of Related Supplemental instruction (minimum): Apprentices will study theories related to all job tasks essential to the trade. Classroom, hands-on lab, and online training help reinforce skills learned during on-the-job training.

What type of work does an Inside Wireman Apprentice do?
Electrical power and lighting systems, power distribution and metering systems, motor control, building automation systems, energy management systems, backup power generation systems, and power supply systems.

Is the apprenticeship full-time or part-time?
The apprentices work full time during the week and attend evening classes on Monday and Wednesday for 3-hour sessions.
What states and cities are in your jurisdiction?

Virginia: Cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach. Counties of Accomack, Brunswick, Greensville, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Northampton, and Southampton

North Carolina: Counties of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, Tyrrell, and Washington.

Will I receive any health or pension benefits?

Yes. IBEW Local Union #80 has negotiated the following Benefits:

  • Family Health Insurance Coverage at no cost to employee
  • 3% gross payroll Company contribution Retirement Pension (all apprentices & journeymen)
  • 7% gross payroll Company contribution Retirement Pension (2nd year and above)
  • $1 per hour Company contribution Annuity Pension (2nd year and above)
  • National Pension Retirement Plan (When an apprentice becomes a member of IBEW Local Union # 80)
  • Credit Union Savings Plan: 4% of gross weekly payroll is automatically deducted and deposited into your personal credit union account. (All apprentices and journeymen).
Are there any out-of-pocket expenses to be an apprentice?
Yes. All apprentices are responsible for paying an annual registration fee. The fee for each school year is $1,250.00 to be paid at the time of acceptance into the program. Apprentices are also responsible for their own tool kits, which averages about $250. Durable work clothes and steel-toe boots are required as well.
Do I need my own tools?

Yes, you will need to provide your own tools. Per Section 3.15 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, all employees covered by this agreement shall provide themselves with and keep in first-class condition a kit of tools consisting of:

  • Tool Pouch & Belt (electrician's pocket type)
  • Screwdrivers: Straight type; Small, Medium & Large Phillips type #1 & #2
  • Diagonal Cutting Pliers
  • High Leverage Side Cutters
  • Long or Needle Nose Pliers
  • Two (2) pairs of Channel Lock Pliers (or equivalent)
  • 6-foot Wood Rule (metal tape measures not allowed)
  • Knife (pocket type)
  • Torpedo Level
  • Hammer (16OZ. straight claw)
  • Voltage Tester (Non-Contact)
  • Hacksaw Frame
  • Pencil
